Critical Fire Public Safety Equipment

The Portsmouth City Council approved $358,000 for the purchase of a second set of turnout gear for firefighters during its regularly scheduled council meeting Tues., January 9. The second set of turnout gear will help firefighters improve self-decontamination after being exposed to carcinogens in the line of duty. Two hundred suits will be purchased through this appropriation and another 40 suits will be purchased via grant.*

For those of us who are comic book and sci-fi and fantasy fans, the library’s Mini-Con is a treasure trove of resources, activities, and experiences that connect thousands of like-minded folks. Children and adults, young and older, donned costumes of their favorite characters and interacted in familiar settings including Cosplay contests, superhero story time, Minecraft marathon, video gaming, a scavenger hunt and so much more! Library staff designed activities for young children, teens, and adults.

A lot of buzz was created by actress Valerie Davis during her performance of Come Freedom, Come. Record crowds packed the Portsmouth Colored Community Library Museum to hear Davis’ first-person account of slave Martha Ann Fields.

Economic Development rolls out new website

To coincide with the annual Portsmouth State of the City event, scheduled for Friday, April 6, the City of Portsmouth’s Department of Economic Development will roll out its brand new website that same day. Business owners, prospective business owners and entrepreneurs big and small wanting to do business with the department will find an engaging, graphically exciting and interactive web presence.

Portsmouth Community Celebrates NFL Legend Roger Brown

The city of Portsmouth and several community organizations are recognizing NFL legend and restauranteur Roger Brown Wednesday, May 1, with a tribute banquet at 6 p.m. Before the tribute event, the celebration will begin with a small parade and pep rally in front of Roger Brown’s Sports Bar and Restaurant and a performance by the All-City Pep Band. The fanfare is followed by an evening of dinner, notable speeches, and accolades for a man who has given so much to the Portsmouth community.

Columbia Care Selected by Virginia Board of Pharmacy

New York-based Columbia Care, one of the country’s leading medical cannabis companies, has received approval and license from the State of Virginia to produce cannabis oil. The company, recently valued at $1.35 billion, is planning to open its dispensary in Portsmouth, Virginia in the spring of 2019.
